Driver assistance systems_Mandatory 2022

July 6, 2022 is a deadline for mandatory driver assistance systems: From then on, new vehicle types must have speed assistants, fatigue and attention warnings and emergency brake assistants installed as standard.

THESE DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEMS WILL BE MANDATORY IN 2022

On July 6, 2022, a new EU regulation will come into force that prescribes certain driver assistance systems for new vehicle types. What is meant by this are completely newly homologated vehicles for the time being. From 2024, step by step, all new registrations will have to be equipped with the systems as standard. According to EU statistics, up to 95 percent of all traffic accidents are due to human error. According to the EU Commission, mandatory driver assistance systems on European roads could save 25,000 lives and prevent at least 140,000 serious injuries by 2038. We list below which assistance systems will be mandatory by July 6, 2022.

SPEED ASSIST

The Intelligent Speed Assistant (ISA) displays a recognized speed limit and warns with a visual and acoustic signal if the permitted maximum speed is exceeded or automatically regulates the vehicle to the prescribed maximum speed.

FATIGUE AND ATTENTION WARNING

Warning systems in the event of tiredness and dwindling driver alertness. These systems monitor the physical condition indirectly, for example by means of a system analysis and by recognizing driving or steering patterns that indicate reduced alertness due to fatigue.

EMERGENCY BRAKE ASSISTANT

The emergency brake assistant brakes the vehicle independently in dangerous situations or provides support during braking. From July 6, 2022, emergency brake assistants according to UN-R 152 will be mandatory for type approval and from July 2024 for new registrations of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles.

EMERGENCY LANE KEEP ASSIST

The emergency lane departure warning system is a driver assistance system that should warn and only correct the driving direction if drivers: inside unintentionally leave the lane.

EMERGENCY BRAKING LIGHT

The system, also known as adaptive brake lights, signals other road users when braking abruptly.

REVERSING ASSISTANT

Systems that are designed to help identify unprotected road users behind the vehicle when reversing.

ACCIDENT DATA STORAGE

Similar to a black box in an airplane, essential parameters related to a possible accident are stored anonymously. The aim is to ensure effective accident investigation and to analyze the performance of the safety systems.

DEVICE FOR INSTALLATION OF ALCOHOL SENSITIVE IMMOBILIZER

It is mandatory to set up a standardized interface to which a control device not specified in the regulation can be connected.
